Corfu
The island of corfu is a place of great natural beauty with rich vegetation throughout its land. There are three sea lakes, small rivers, lakes and many traditional villages such as Benitses, Moraitika, Varipatades, Korakiana, Ipsos, cedar and Dasia that are definitely worth exploring.
The are numerous beaches and shores to satisfy every taste and age group. In the majority of them, (usually the larger shores), you will find umbrellas and sunbeds, and a variety of water sport facilities. On the other hand, if a more quiet, serene cove is more towards your idea of a peaceful sunbathing session, you will not be disappointed in finding such shores even in the middle of August.
The town of Corfu is by itself a great sightseeing spot. The cobblestone streets of the “Old Town” and the Venetian architectural jewels with the spider web wash-lines attached between the houses will certainly transport you in a different era. The town central square, the infamous “Spaniada”, was built in 1820 and towards the west side of it you can happily do some “people watching”, while sipping a cup of coffee in the many cafes you will encounter in “Liston”.
Like many other Greek islands, Corfu is no exception to the countless churches one will come across while on holiday here. Some of the most notable being: the patron saint of Corfu, Saint Spyridonas, and the historical buildings, such as the old and new Fort, the palace of Saint Michael and St. George, the Town Hall, (San Giakomo theatre), the palace of “Mon Repo” and last but not least, the museums of Byzantine Art and History.
By far the most characteristic sight of the island, (the “trademark” if you prefer), is the green island of “Pontikonisi”,where you can reach during the summer months from the cosmopolitan area of “Kanoni”, the island of “Vlaherna” or from “Perama”.
Approximately 9Km outside Corfu town you will find the “Achillion”, the summer home of Princess “Sissy” of Austria. It is a splendid neoclassical building with exquisite gardens and sculptures, works of art and statues dedicated to the ancient Greek ideals and depicting the heroism of “Achilles”.
The sightseeing, cultural treasures and natural beauty of Corfu is plenty throughout the island. Ensure that you can spend as many days as possible in order to witness as many of our treasures as you possibly can.
